We bought into the hype a little with Emporium Melbourne. As far as shopping centres go it’s impressive. Walking from Myer on Bourke Street all the way through Emporium to Melbourne Central offers uninterrupted retail excitement. There’s probably nowhere better for range, and additions like Uniqlo & Muji are welcome ones. That said, we can’t help shaking that somewhat souless shopping centre feeling.
Melbourne has a distinctive city culture more than a little defined by its hidden gems. While the Crown Casino has some of the ‘best’ restaurants in the city, it’s not our favourite place to eat. Having shops or restaurants all lined up side by side in purpose built spaces, many of them internationally owned and managed is fine, but just fine.
Below is a list of a few favourite retail gems in Melbourne. These are locally owned and all somewhat unique. They are in unexpected places full of history and character, qualities we’d much prefer to be known for.
