"Two of the most charm-endowed gents in town"

What's so Melbourne About Emporium?

April 30, 2014

We bought into the hype a little with Emporium Melbourne. As far as shopping centres go it’s impressive. Walking from Myer on Bourke Street all the way through Emporium to Melbourne Central offers uninterrupted retail excitement. There’s probably nowhere better for range, and additions like Uniqlo & Muji are welcome ones. That said, we can’t help shaking that somewhat souless shopping centre feeling.

Melbourne has a distinctive city culture more than a little defined by its hidden gems. While the Crown Casino has some of the ‘best’ restaurants in the city, it’s not our favourite place to eat. Having shops or restaurants all lined up side by side in purpose built spaces, many of them internationally owned and managed is fine, but just fine.

Below is a list of a few favourite retail gems in Melbourne. These are locally owned and all somewhat unique. They are in unexpected places full of history and character, qualities we’d much prefer to be known for.

Smart Alec Hatters – Quality hats and accessories on Gertrude Street, one of Melbourne’s coolest

Eastern Market – High end designer clothing in a beautiful space

Somewhere – Elegant retail space and gallery in the beautiful Royal Arcade

Five Boroughs – A well curated selection of bits and pieces; great for gifts in East Brunswick

Hunter Gatherer – The cream of the op-shop crop from the Brotherhood of St. Laurence

Alice Euphemia – Ladies fashion from local designers in the charming Cathedral Arcade

Design A Space – Creative retail gallerys that give local designers a place to shine

Grace – Stylish and sophisticated ladies fashion and accessories from around the world

Bruce – An excellent collection of second hand clothing and accessories from designer labels

Christine – A trove of remarkable fashion accessories tucked away on flinders lane

Incu – Sharp and innovative products from around the world; beautifully presented

Elegantly Scant – A lingerie store where craftsmanship is the sexiest quality of all

Pickings and Parry - Heritage workwear and manly accoutrements in sepia tone

Beggar Man Thief – Shoes for fashionable gentleman

Lord Coconut – Men’s designer jewellery and accessories you just won’t find anywhere else

Captains of Industry – Gentlemans tailor, cobbler & barber

Embiggen Books – Family owned and run, it’s one of many excellent independent local book stores

Basement Discs – A great little basement record store in Block Place

Melbournalia – An excellent option for truly local souveneirs and bits of ‘Melbournalia’

Clementine’s – Only the best local knickknacks; a perfect place to try Melbourne’s ‘Rooftop Honey’
