Melbourne has an impressively diverse and eclectic arts scene. Anyone who had a chance to check out ‘Melbourne Now,’ earlier in the year was given an excellent insight into some of this. It’s no coincidence we boast the country’s oldest art gallery, the National Gallery of Victoria. The Ian Potter Centre, dedicated to Australian art, wonderfully complements the NGV. The Australian Centre of Contemporary Art is an absolute gem and also well worth a visit. As we come into winter they offer an excellent refuge from the cold.
Of course our independent galleries should not be overlooked. There are literally dozens of these, with most centred around the inner city, Collingwood and Fitzroy. The Australian Galleries are top notch, as is the Sutton Gallery, Fehily Contemporary, Helen Gory Galerie and the Brunswick Street Gallery.
If you’d prefer to get out of the city, The TarraWarra Museum of Art in Healesville is a real treat. Be sure to check out the White Rabbit brewery while you’re in the area. The Heide Museum of Modern Art is another excellent option in nearby Heidelberg; leave plenty of time for a delicious lunch at Café Vue after.
