Obesity has become the single biggest threat to public health in Australia. It’s not cigarettes and it’s certainly not sharks that are killing us… it’s being too fat. You know what doesn’t make you fat though? Sport.
We love eating and drinking well but we also love sport and nowhere more than Melbourne. If you’re planning to visit you should check out the sporting calendar. There’s every chance you will have a world-class sporting event to enjoy while you’re in town. Our favourites include the Aussie Open (Tennis, January), The Grand Prix (Formula 1, March) the AFL Grand Final (Australian Rules Football, September), the Melbourne Cup Carnival (Horse Racing, November) and the Boxing Day Test (Cricket, December).
Watching sport is fun and for many an almost religious experience, still, you’re more likely to stave off obesity by getting involved. Here are some great options for being fit and active in Melbourne:
Running the ‘tan, the Melbourne Botanic Gardens.
Kayaking on the Yarra River, we can organise that for you!
Walking through Studley Park, only 10 minutes from the city in beautiful Kew.
Riding along Beach Road, it takes in all of stunning Port Phillip Bay.
Playing Golf in Albert Park.
Free exercise classes at Fed Square.
Swimming at MSAC, a world class aquatic centre.
Hiking in the Dandenong Ranges, just an hour from Melbourne.
Surfing at Bells Beach, the home of the Rip Curl Pro.
Skiing at Mt. Buller, there’s already heaps of snow this year.
If you want a guide or help with bike hire, kayaks, maps, transfers, whatever… we’re your guys. So get out there, it’s a matter of life and death.
