"Two of the most charm-endowed gents in town"

Gemima Cody, Time Out Melbourne

Another Side of the Yarra Valley

August 14, 2014

We’ve been doing loads of trips lately, out to the Great Ocean Road, the Yarra Valley and other Victorian highlights. Frequent visitors to Melbourne should really try and make some time for these treasures that are scattered right across the state.

Each Localing Tour is subtly different because we focus on the interests of our specific guests. This creates a little extra work for us but it also means we have the opportunity to get to know areas really well. In doing the same tour every single time you’re a little bit limited and a little bit bored… something anyone who has done some tour guiding can tell you.

On a recent trip to the Yarra Valley we were asked to keep alcohol from being a feature. It’s an area famous for its wonderful wineries and breweries and we certainly know our way around the best of these. This tour was a great opportunity to focus on some other highlights. If you’re planning on heading to the region with kids or non-drinkers, here are some fantastic reasons why it’s still well worth your while.

  • The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery has all sorts of wonderful treats and you can see the oompa loompas at their work. And yes, they offer free samples.

  • The Yarra Valley Dairy has some seriously incredible cheeses. We really loved the goats cheeses and Persian feta.

  • Healesville Sanctuary is an obvious one, especially for overseas visitors looking for wildlife encounters. A highlight for us was the opportunity to see the elusive platypus.

  • Not too far away, another key attraction is the Puffing Billy Railway. The journey is sure to make you sentimental about the golden days of train travel and the forest setting is a real treat. The old steam train has open carriages so dress warmly on cold days.

  • TarraWarra Museum of Art is just beautiful architecturally, the setting is amazing and the collection is well worth an hour or two of your time.

  • Hedgend Maze is surprisingly fun, especially for kids but especially for adults.

  • You could easily spend hours wandering the historic streets of Healesville, Yarra Glen or nearby Warburton. They offer great antique shopping, excellent dining options and buckets of charm.

Take the guesswork out of your Yarra Valley adventure, and the driving, and the organisation… by giving us a ring. At Localing Tours we specialise in one of a kind city tours and day trips.
