Meet Sophie, a Localing guide and Melbourne local who’s knowledge and passion for the city stands out during her tours. Sophie is the first to admit that there’s always more to learn about our unique city, “that’s something I love about working here - I’m constantly finding out about new restaurants, new places to check out. No matter how long you’ve been in Melbourne, something new is always just around the corner”.
Living in the inner city suburb of Richmond, she has a few favourite spots that she’ll head to for a good meal. Best brunch spot? Au79 on Nicholson Street, Abbotsford or Faraday's Cage in Fitzroy. She counts herself lucky to have the best of both worlds on her doorstep, with the suburbs and the city colliding in her neighbourhood, “I can’t get enough of Yarra Bend Park. With sporting fields, woodlands and beautiful tracks to walk or ride along the Yarra, I try to spend at least some part of every day there”.
Wondering what to check out in Melbourne and wider Victoria? Sophie recommends hitting the coast. “The Great Ocean Road is definitely best done over two days. Staying somewhere overnight and having the freedom to go off on little side adventures everywhere, that’s what I love. You can laze around at a secluded beach, see some wildlife - I reckon that’s just perfect”
If you’re looking to stay a little closer to the city, Sophie hopes that all visitors to Victoria head down to the Yarra Valley wine region during their stay. With beautiful scenery, world class wine, cheese and chocolate, “you really can’t beat a day in the Yarra Valley”.
Wine not your beverage of choice? She’s got beer covered, too. Duke Street in Abbotsford is home to one of her favourite micro-breweries, Moondog Breweries. With rotating taps of interesting brews and a funky vibe, it’s one of the best kept secrets of Melbourne’s inner north.
Sophie loves Melbourne’s diversity above all, “no matter how different you are, or where you’re from, you can always find a neighbourhood in Melbourne that suits you. And I think that’s pretty special”.
