Dan in front of a brick wall in an industrial part of Abbotsford.
Meet Dan, a Melbourne local and Localing’s co-founder. He created the idea of offering a boutique touring experience with good friend Dean, in which Localing has become “a labour of love for the two of us”. He says, that “the concept came about from a combination of many years of travelling and generally just loving Melbourne and all of the wonderful things to do here”.
He thinks that Localing sets itself apart from other touring companies because, “our mantra is to give people experiences they just couldn’t have without us, which is very much steeped in good old fashioned hospitality. We are also very passionate to innovate, and I think for us the guiding principle has been to create experiences that didn’t exist before us. We like to look at our own lives, our own version of the city that we love, and create something that’s genuinely unique, personal and a reflection of our characters and the beautiful city of Melbourne that we get to call home. We have also really done our best to recruit people that are going to put you at ease within the first minute. It’s not just that they have outgoing, engaging and charismatic personalities – they are also knowledgeable, well connected, and they understand the idea of being a stranger, in a strange land”.
Why does he love this little pocket of the world so much? “Victoria is such an amazing region, within a couple of hours you are introduced to world class wine, surfing, and incredible wildlife. It’s a region that’s so wonderfully diverse, where you could be skiing in the Victorian Alps just four hours out of Melbourne. There is such an abundant array of natural assets, that are unrivaled to anywhere in Australia, and this is complemented by the country’s most innovative and creative city”.
With so much knowledge about this city, does he have a favourite tour? “It’s always changing because no two tours are ever alike. I used to adore the Yarra Valley, but at the moment I’m really enjoying the nightlife tours. We do this tour called Dinner, Tales and Cocktails. It’s very much a tour where you get to visit some of the city’s best night spots, meet really cool and interesting characters around town, try interesting cocktails, and taste some of the incredible food on offer in Melbourne. It’s a great opportunity to break bread with visitors, to learn about their lives, and to exchange a bit of our own lives. It’s a really deeply enjoyable and personal experience”.
“I am very privileged to work in the best company, in the best industry, in the best city in the world. I really think there are very few people who enjoy what they do as much as we get to. We really get to operate in the city with so much collaboration, where residents across the board have such a passion for their home. Melbourne is very unique in that regard, it makes our job which would be pleasurable anywhere in the world, particularly spectacular. I can’t thank our guests, our wholesalers, the hotels we work with, and my team enough, for the great privilege that has stumbled upon us. It’s simply the best.”
